Yesterday Dan and I were watching a History Channel show on YouTube about the 2012 thing. It basically went back to all these ancient oracles of Greece, Rome, Europe, and so forth that predicted some sort of earth-shattering calamity in our time, talked about the Mayan calendar, repeated itself on points several times... anyway.

They also included the book of Revelation and I was very perturbed by the fact that a) their knowledge of the book is barely surface knowledge and have they EVEN read it? b) John has NO time prophecies in the book of Revelation. Daniel has time prophecies, and none of them pinpoint a day for the apocalypse. Jesus says He will come at a day and hour WE KNOW NOT... when those who are not waiting for Him will not be expecting Him.

I have no idea what will happen on that day in 2012. However, my understanding of the Bible gives me the assurance that I don't need to worry about it, because until Jesus comes, the earth will NOT be destroyed. He will either come before that date, when no-one is prepared, or He will come long enough after that date so that people will have stopped caring. Either way. I'm not worried about it.

There was also one man on the show who was scoffing at Christians for believing that Jesus' coming was right around the corner. 2 Peter 3.3,4 says:

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."

We have hope that those who don't have God are incapable of understanding.

Anyway.

Man I can't stand it when people try to predict the year of Armageddon. And I can't stand Pat Robertson's claims of being able to predict the future. Sure, he has been right at times, but he himself said, "My track record is pretty good. But sometimes I miss." Yeh, if you miss, you're a false prophet, mister.

I remember back in the late 90s when the tabloids in the supermarket checkout lanes said, "The world will end in the year 2000." Well guess what? Almost nine years after the world was "supposed" to end and the only "end" we're getting close to is a socialist, Orwellian society in the United States. Even though I didn't want Obama (or McCain), and I'm somewhat disappointed with what the Electoral College (well, and the people) chose, I can just praise God that every day I live is one day closer to the second Advent.

Heh, if it gets to the point where the Government persecutes Christians that don't follow a specific set of rules, so what if they kill me? It just means that I get to take a nap so that I can be caught up on all that lost sleep when I meet Jesus.

False prophets galore, that's for sure.

I guess I look at this election as a sort of wake-up call to us (and, I hope, other Christians too) to become more watchful, because it's getting close to the end. I really have a feeling that Obama is going to start setting things in motion for what we know will be happening, whether he's the one to see them through or not.

I'm not really too worried about it, either. The body they may kill. I have nothing to fear.

I haven't heard about the "2012 thing," (and really I'm not interested in another boring hysteria -- lol, oxymoron!) -- but this sounds very much like the "89 Reasons Jesus Will Return in '89" that caused such hyperventilating in 1987-89. People were quitting their jobs, selling their belongings, and sitting on hilltops, waiting for the Rapture!

And [livejournal.com profile] mbrsart is right about the Y2K hysteria. People cashing in their savings, buying guns, ammo, and dried foods -- terrified that the World Would End at 0:00 on January 1.

I'm so tired of it.

Jesus told us that we can't know the day or the hour. We should leave that knowledge -- too heavy and terrifying for our finite minds and hearts to bear -- for the Lord to carry! What peace we forfeit by trying to figure it all out -- and to what end? What good does it do us to think we know? What good does it do others to think we know? None.

We must live our lives today to please the Father, to make Him proud of us, because we love Him and want to please Him.

Then whenever Jesus comes to take us Home, we'll be ready.

Hmm, I never heard of the 89 Reasons. Then again, I was small.

I think that it's all well and good to be prepared for things. Dan has a lot of provisions for us should times get hard and food scarce, but we both know that in the end, it's GOD Who will take care of us. We have to do the best we can to be ready for anything, but leave the rest to Him.

I don't know and don't care about 2012. But I do know that God has promised not to destroy the earth again until He returns. So if that's after 2012? Earth will remain intact.
